Elderberry has been used as a healing super-food for centuries. Western science has proven elderberry is one of the most nutrient-rich foods found in nature; high in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Iron, Potassium, antioxidants, and fiber. Science has also proven elderberry is a powerful protector against seasonal allergies, cold or flu symptoms, and even delivering support from a virus or viral infection.
Elderberry provides a protective "shield" around your cells which provides the strongest possible defense from a virus or viral infection. When flu and other viruses attack our bodies they use "spikes" (hemagglutinin) to puncture and bind to cell walls. Once attached, the spikes deliver an enzyme (neuraminidase) that infects and breaks down the cell. After the virus has infected and decayed one cell, it searches for another; thus 'spreading' in your body. By shielding cells, elderberry prevents viruses from puncturing and infecting cells. Elderberry also supports whole-body wellness to fight seasonal allergies as well as cold or flu symptoms. Isn't nature cool?!
Viruses can be very clever by mutating to avoid our bodies' natural defenses and even vaccines. This is also why the flu shot is often ineffective. By the time a flu vaccine is developed, the virus may well have already mutated to become impervious to the vaccine.(2) But elderberry really doesn't care. Elderberry is also effective against viral mutations. Elderberry presents strong clinical evidence that it fortifies your body's defenses while also shielding your cells to naturally fight a wide variety of viruses; regardless of whether, or not, they have mutated.
If you take elderberry as a food 'Everyday' or if you only take it after you feel symptomatic and you're trying to 'Restore' health, elderberry will support your body and prevent the virus from spreading and prolonging the duration of viral symptoms. (1)

Scientific Research:
There are two related varieties of elderberry that are commonly used to make elderberry syrup. While the varieties are similar, there are significant reasons why we choose to only use premium-grade European elderberry from trusted and verified sources over the American variety.
European elderberry is the gold standard. The European elderberry has been very important to the health, vitality, and culture of European societies for thousands of years. All of the scientific documentation rediscovering what pre-modern civilizations have known for millennia have used the European berry for their studies. Today, modern growers are cultivating the European elderberry to offer only the healthiest varieties that deliver consistent potency and flavor. Not to be underestimated in terms of importance, the countries from which we source our berries have much more stringent regulations regarding the use of pesticides and herbicides than the United States. This leads to much cleaner and healthier soil for crops...and a more-pure product when you need protection from seasonal allergies, cold or flu symptoms or even a virus or viral infection.
Although the tradition of the American elderberry is deep and rich in Native American medicine, and the American variety may share common curative and preventative properties with its European cousin, the American elderberry has not been studied to PROVE that it is as effective. Until science can prove the American elderberry is as effective and NOT until American farmers reduce the volume of pesticides and herbicides that pollute our soils and water, Pona Farms & Farmacy will continue to source the best quality and cleanest and more trusted option.
